What began as an independent project in high school, transformed into a space where artists are supported and uplifted within a community of small artists during the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown. Alyssa Olvera is the creative and managerial lead for A La Moda Magazine. A La Moda is a creative community-based publication in Austin, Texas with a mission to bring Central Texas artists together and provide them with a platform and funds to create and showcase their work. Although Texas-based, submissions are allowed from all around the world.
Twice a year, Olvera recruits members to join her free organization where creatives are encouraged to collaborate with other small artists. These artists can range from photographers, videographers, models, stylists, hair/makeup/nail artists, writers and more. Applications are then reviewed and members are paired into teams to create a piece of art. This process includes mood board submissions, general and individual meetings, and constant email/slack communication.
Once artists have completed their projects our layout team, consisting of Olvera & Somalia Longoria, then creates beautiful spreads for the artworks and combines them into a magazine. This magazine is then printed and distributed at our bi-annual Art Show where we highlight everyone’s work through large art prints, videos and, of course, our magazine.
Olvera is the Production Team Lead for all teams in A La Moda and head of Online Presence. She develops campaigns to promote open applications, available merchandise, and upcoming events.
